Empowering Seniors Sessions
Another well attended seminar was held at the centre on November 29th. Bill McCloskey presented a session on Tech/Computer information which included what to do if you are hacked, best ways to track passwords and retrieving lost files. This session was very informative and a bit of an eye opener. For those unable to attend, the Power Point presentation can be found below.
In the New Year, NCSA will be holding small group sessions with Bill. Information and signup sheet will be available soon.
NCSA held our 7th Empowering Seniors Session on October 25th. Tracey Hoffman, Road Safety & Community Coordinator for Northern BC, ICBC presented on Road Safety, Winter Driving and the ERA(Enhanced Road Assessment). This session was very informative. For those members unable to attend, we have lots of books, “Learn to drive smart/ Your guide to driving safely available at the centre. We also have reflectors for those dark winter days.
Linda M was the winner of the Save On gift basket and Berna A won the ICBC Road Safety Kit.

NCSA held our 6th Empowering Seniors Seminar on September 13th titled Fraud Prevention/Identity Theft. The Branch Manager from the TD Bank attended to bring awareness to our members on these important topics. Twenty-seven were in attendance and Doug D won the gift basket from Save-On Foods
CPR/AED CLASS
NCSA held our 5th Empowering Seniors Session. This was a five-hour course with Doug and Melanie from First Response. Ten of our members were able to attend. We received a refresher on signs and symptoms of heart attacks/strokes and recovery position. The hands-on practice with CPR/AED was invaluable. Education shared on checking vitals, secondary assessment, good patient care and more.
CPR/Automated External Defibrillator Presentation
NCSA held our fourth Empowering Seniors Session on June 7th. Doug and Melanie (Missie) from First Response presented a very informative and captivating session on CPR/Automated External Defibrillator. Twenty-two members and three guests attended this session. This session will be followed up with a five hour session for those members wanting to refresh and learn more about the signs and recognition of heart attacks and strokes and much more. An opportunity for some hands on practice.
Jeannette Foot was the winner of the Save-On gift basket.
These Speaker Sessions are funded by a grant from Northern Health.
Emergency Preparedness
NCSA held our third Seniors Empowered Speaker Series on May 3rd titled Emergency Preparedness. Tanya Spooner, Manager, Emergency Services with the City of Prince George and Colby Molcak, Emergency Services Coordinator with the RDFFG were in attendance. Valuable information was provided on being prepared, Grab and Go Kits, FireSmart and receiving important alerts, to name a few.
This session ended with a question and answer session. Lou E was the lucky winner of the door prize.
Fall Prevention
We held our first Seniors Empowered Speakers Series on February 16, 2024 at the centre. Our members joined us for an informative, fun filled morning with Nadeen, the Community Relations Coordinator from Comfort Keepers, along with a paramedic and Chris from Medi Chair. Our main focus was on fall prevention. Medi Chair brought some speciality equipment for seniors to help keep us safe in our homes. Everyone in attendance received a free Life Kit. Forty-six members attended and Darlene K was the winner of the door prize.
Your Life, Your Dignity
Dignity Memorial presented a captivating morning on the theme of "Your Life, Your Legacy" at North Central Seniors Association on Friday March 1, 2024, from 10:00 - 11:30am. Thirty members attended this captivating morning that included a discussion on available services and options that we need to assist families in preparing for the time when a loved one passes. The presenters provided an easy-to-follow guide for our final arrangements that will provide assurance and alleviate the emotional burden for families who are faced with arranging a loved one' funeral or cremation. A personal planning guide was offered and the availability of safeguards through insurance policies was discussed. The members had ample time to ask questions and the presenters did an excellent job to provide answers to issues that were unclear. SUBMITTED BY Anna Perold.
